Mary Temple Nieter, a devoted school counselor and music enthusiast, passed away peacefully on Sunday, May 12, 2024, at the age of 80 in Montgomery Village, Maryland.
Born on September 11, 1943, in Racine, Wisconsin, she was the daughter of Herman Temple Nieter and Dr. Helene Boyer Nieter. Mary graduated from Oak Park-River Forest High School, Illinois in 1961, attended Baylor University in Texas, earned a Bachelor of Science in Physical Education from Northern Illinois University in 1966, and completed a Masters of Education at the College of William & Mary in 1969.
Throughout her career, Mary was a dedicated guidance counselor, advocating for immigrant families and children. She helped countless students thrive during her tenure at Prince George’s County Schools. Her commitment to education and community service left a mark on all who she helped and had the privilege of working alongside her.
Mary is survived by her daughter, Monica Patiño, who was the light of her life and her deepest love. She also leaves behind her beloved grandchildren, Tiffany, Eduardo Jr., Gabriel, and Esteban Patiño; her great-grandchildren, Isaiah and Leon; and numerous cherished friends. She was predeceased by her brother, Temple E. Nieter, in 2007, and her sister, Carol N. Ackerman, in 2017.
An avid lover of music, Mary was a choral leader who nurtured and inspired junior choirs for many years. She was a longtime member of Faith United Methodist Church in Rockville and later, Damascus United Methodist Church.
Mary also had a profound love for sports, especially the WNBA. She was a loyal fan of the Mystics and an enthusiastic follower of the Little League World Series, always eager to share the latest results.
Mary Temple Nieter will be deeply missed and forever honored for her compassion, dedication, and spirited presence.
A service in her memory will be held on Saturday, June 1, 2024 at 1 PM at Faith United Methodist Church, 6810 Montrose Road, Rockville, MD 20852.
In lieu of flowers friends may donate to St. Jude Children’s Hospital in Mary’s name.
