Deborah R. Jones, affectionately known as "GiGi" to her family, was born on April 24, 1942 to the loving parents of Donald and Deborah Barber in Philadelphia, PA. Deborah, a Godly woman of great faith, peacefully departed on Wednesday, August 21, 2024, at age 82, in Gaithersburg, MD. She leaves behind a remarkable legacy as a Vocational Specialist with extensive work and advocacy for individuals with disabilities and mental health challenges. Deborah’s daughters, Dawn Johnson and Dr. Michelle Jones-London will cherish her memory and build upon her legacy.
Deborah dedicated her career to serving those in need, working at the United Cerebral Palsy, Chances Day Program, and other allied nonprofit organizations. Her relentless commitment shone through as she attended numerous conferences and events, often alongside dignitaries, to raise funds and awareness for her clients. As a Vocational Specialist, she championed educational training, employment, and supportive services for disabled and mentally challenged individuals, making a profound impact in their lives. Deborah was an advocate for justice and exemplified a spirit of excellence in all her endeavors.
Deborah is remembered not only for her professional accomplishments but also for the unconditional love she shared with those around her. Deborah was a fierce protector of her loved ones. She had an unwavering “Can do spirit” which propelled her to never quit on any challenge she faced. Even after becoming a widow, she successfully assisted her two daughters with graduating college and receiving advanced degrees.
An elegant and brave woman, Deborah possessed a keen eye for artwork and interior design, bringing beauty into her surroundings and those of others. Deborah’s compassion radiated in all her interactions, touching the lives of many with her kindness and honesty. She understood the power of advocacy and compassion, and she exemplified these qualities throughout her life. She was truly ahead of her time, and her contributions will continue to inspire others.
The footprint Deborah left in this world is indelible, and her memory will forever be cherished by those who loved her best. Deborah's legacy lives on through every cherished memory and the lasting influences upon the countless lives she touched. As we reflect on her journey, we celebrate a life well lived with purpose and dedication to serving and helping others reach their best life. We honor the amazing impact she made for her family, friends, community, and beyond. She was a devoted wife to the late James Jones and a loving mother. She leaves her two surviving daughters and two grandchildren.

Deborah was predeceased by her siblings Marion Barber and Ernest Barber. She is fondly remembered by her beloved siblings: Myrna Johnson; Donald Barber Jr. (Barbara); Anna Barber; and Darryl Barber. She leaves behind numerous nieces, nephews, family members, and friends, who can attest to her unwavering faith and tireless commitment to helping others. She fought the “good fight of faith” and now is resting from all her labors in God’s loving arms.
